Bishop's Charities Game

Packers partner with Catholic Charities for 50th annual pre-season football game

CG-50th-Anniversary-LogoOn Thursday, August 26, 2010, the Green Bay Packers will host the Indianapolis Colts for the 50th annual Bishop's Charities Game at Lambeau Field. Each year, the Packers organization donates approximately $55,000 of its Bishop's Charities Game ticket sales to Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Green Bay. Kickoff time is 7 p.m.

"Catholic Charities owes a large debt of gratitude to the Green Bay Packers organization for their willingness to highlight the many and varied services of Catholic Charities here in the Diocese of Green Bay through the Bishop’s Charity game," said Karen Johnston, director of Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Green Bay.

The charitable contest began in 1960 when the diocese approached legendary Packers Coach Vince Lombardi with the idea. The original contract gave the Packers, their opponent and the church each one-third of the gate receipts. During the 1970s, the Packers and the church changed the contract so the Diocese would receive a flat donation, rather than a percentage.

To date, the series has raised over $3.4 million. "This gift allows us to carry out our mission of providing help, strengthening families and building community here in Northeastern Wisconsin. These services last year served over 45,000 people seeking help from our agency," Johnston said.

"The Packers are proud to carry on the community tradition of the Bishop’s Charity Game," said Packers President/CEO Mark Murphy. "Catholic Charities does outstanding work in our area and serves as an inspiration to all of us. We look forward to another exciting game Aug. 26, as well as an opportunity to salute Catholic Charities' efforts."

Players from the 1960 team will be on hand to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Bishop's Charities Game. Jim Temp, Bob Skoronski, and Gary Knafelc will be present from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m., along with Bishop David Ricken, for autographs and photos at the Fan Walkway outside the Tundra Tailgate Zone on the southeast side of the stadium.
