Thousands Expected Aug. 15 for Mass and Procession on the Feast of the Assumption
Bishop David Ricken will celebrate the annual outdoor Mass for the feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary at 10 a.m. Aug. 15 at the Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help™ at Champion. Benediction and a Rosary Procession will follow the Mass at the Diocesan Marian Shrine.
On Dec. 8, 2010, Bishop Ricken officially approved the three 1859 apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary to Adele Brise at the site of the Shrine.
Last year an estimated 3,000 people attended the Aug. 15 Mass, said Karen Tipps, Shrine volunteer. "Last year we had so many more people in July and August because of the publicity from the ABC News Nightline show that ran on July 7th. So I am not sure what impact that will have on August 15th this year."

Long-standing Tradition
Thousands of pilgrims have come to the Shrine each Aug. 15 for the celebration since the Great Peshtigo Fire of 1871.
The Feast of the Assumption commemorates the taking of Mary's soul and body into heaven at the end of her life. The feast dates back to at least the seventh century when its celebration was already established in Jerusalem and Rome and is one of the most solemn Marian feasts. Catholics revere Mary because she is the mother of Jesus Christ.
