Disciples on the Way

DisciplesOnTheWayCover"Disciples on the Way" is an invitation from Bishop Ricken to all Catholics of the Diocese of Green Bay to embark upon a missionary journey into the new evangelization. Released in the Spring of 2014, this invitation is a deepening of the first pastoral letter entitled "Parishes: Called to Be Holy, Fully Engaged, Fully Alive" and is a response to the increased emphasis within the universal church focused on the new evangelization.

The diocesan journey is divided into three emphases over the coming six years:

Bishop Ricken's pastoral reflection for Phase 1 of Disciples on the Way is entitled "Teach My People to Pray" and was released in August of 2014. "The call of these first two years, is to put first things first, which is all about establishing priorities centered around God; especially in our time, our talent and our treasure, our prayer, our service, and our sharing. I would like to invite all the faithful in the Diocese to take the next step in deepening our prayer lives," Bishop Ricken notes.

"Teach My People to Pray" is Bishop Ricken's pastoral reflection for Phase 1: Formation in Prayer & Holiness (2014-15) for Disciples on the Way.

As Bishop Ricken puts it: "Responding to the deep desire of our parishes to embrace and embody the New Evangelization, we must begin as 'Disciples on the Way' with a two-year emphasis on prayer. During these first two years, we will strive to answer the Lord's call to "teach my people to pray.'"

DisciplesOnTheWayCoverDisciples on the Way: An Invitation

"Disciples on the Way" is an invitation from Bishop Ricken to embark on a missionary journey into the new evangelization. It deepens the first pastoral letter, "Parishes: Called to Be Holy, Fully Engaged, Fully Alive," and responds to the increasing emphasis in the universal church on the new evangelization.

As Bishop Ricken puts it: "I would like to invite everyone to a journey; a journey of deepening our prayer life, of learning to be better disciples ourselves and of making disciples of others for the sake of the Kingdom of God. I invite each and every one of you to journey as the body of Christ with your Pastor or Pastoral leader and with your fellow parishioners in living out this 'mission map' as a 'Disciple on the Way.'"

The journey is divided into three emphases: Formation in Prayer and Holiness (2014-16), Formation in Discipleship (2016-18), and Formation in Mission (2018-20).

Disciples on the Way Year IIDisciples on the Way: Year II

In this second year of "Disciples on the Way," an invitation from Bishop Ricken to embark on a missionary journey into the new evangelization, he asks "that you continue to seek ways to pray together in your household and grow to love the Lord and the church. I especially ask you to transform your home into a school of prayer and love by making the Holy Family of Jesus, Joseph and Mary your model and example."

Bishop Ricken continues: "In the words of St. John Paul II, the mission of the family is to 'guard, reveal and communicate love' (1) and the family serves as a school of compassion, respect, humility and forgiveness in the midst of a world darkened by self-absorption, conflict and selfishness. Whether you live by yourself or with others, your home is a household of faith where Christ is at the center of your life."

2011-Pastoral-Letter-CoverParishes: Called to be Holy, Fully Engaged, Fully Alive

On Pentecost in 2011, Bishop Ricken published a pastoral letter, "Parishes: Called to be Holy, Fully Engaged, Fully Alive," in which he says: "the parish is the place where the people of God gather to offer worship and sacrifice to God and where they grow in deeper intimacy with Christ and the church through the sacramental life of faith."

As Bishop Ricken puts it: "In a world that has become very secularized and is losing sight of God, it is incredibly important for all of us who are members of the church to help to satisfy the great hunger for holiness and for meaning in life through spirituality. Some people are embracing other religions or even migrating to 'New Age' philosophies that can never compare with the truth and the great treasury of spiritual wisdom that is contained in the Catholic Church."

Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy

Resource Guide for Parishes

Year of Mercy Logo 2015-2016Pope Francis declared an Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy from the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception (December 8, 2015) and concluding on the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe (Sunday, November 20, 2016). Pope Francis said he called this Jubilee Year so "the Church may render more clear her mission to be a witness to mercy." This, he said, "is a journey which begins with spiritual conversion."

"I am confident that the whole Church, which is in such need of mercy for we are sinners, will be able to find in this Jubilee the joy of rediscovering and rendering fruitful God's mercy, with which we are all called to give comfort to every man and every woman of our time. Do not forget that God forgives all, and God forgives always. Let us never tire of asking forgiveness. Let us henceforth entrust this Year to the Mother of Mercy, that she turn her gaze upon us and watch over our journey: our penitential journey, our year-long journey with an open heart, to receive the indulgence of God, to receive the mercy of God," Pope Francis said.
