Diocese Announces Catholic Relief Services Rice Bowl Grant Award Winners

Diocese-Green-Bay-LogoGREEN BAY, Wis. Aug. 27, 2015) -- The Catholic Diocese of Green Bay is happy to announce the 2015 Catholic Relief Services (CRS) Rice Bowl Grant Award Winners. The diocese is a co-sponsor of the annual CRS Rice Bowl collection held every year during Lent.

This year's recipients are:

  • CASA ALBA Melanie, Green Bay, to provide simple sports items, journals and reading materials for the Green Bay Kids Training program (ages 5-9).
  • Love Learning to offer literacy materials to parents enrolled in Love Life for children in the month of their first, second and third birthdays.
  • Fox Valley Literacy Council to supply English-language-learning parents and their tutors with educational materials and safe and reliable daycare for their children while attending lessons.
  • Catholic Charities, Green Bay, to provide direct assistance to refugee families during the resettlement process.
  • Greater Green Bay Habitat for Humanity for interpretation and translation services when working with Hmong and Spanish communities.
  • Literacy Green Bay to purchase classroom supplies as well as curriculum and testing materials for adult English-language learners.
  • Literacy Partners of Kewaunee County to provide training and materials for tutors, textbooks for students, and resource center and computer items.
  • St. Patrick's Parish, Green Bay, to continue serving immigrant needs by providing prepackaged boxes of food and toiletry items.
  • Northeast Wisconsin Technical College to support a student emergency fund to help students in need financially and to help students reach their educational goals.
  • Marinette & Oconto Counties Literacy Council to promote available adult literacy services and provide tutor training.
  • Hispanic Resource Center of Door and Kewaunee Counties to help members of the Latino community through emergency funding for food, shelter, utilities and medication.
  • Manna for Life Ministries to help meet the food needs of a growing immigrant and refugee population within Brown County.

Generous Parishioners Provide Support

"Through our parishioner's prayers, generosity and sacrifice, we are able to provide assistance to the needy with food, clothing and other needs within our diocese and throughout the world," said Eric Weydt, Catholic Social Justice Coordinator for the Diocese of Green Bay and diocesan program coordinator of CRS Rice Bowl.

CRS Rice Bowl is a program of prayer, fasting, learning and giving to help meet the basic material needs of immigrant and refugee people in northeastern Wisconsin. Twenty-five percent of the money collected through diocesan parishes is reserved for local use. This year, $13,000 was awarded to agencies at the local level.

CRS is motivated by the example of Jesus Christ to assist the poor and suffering in nearly 100 countries on the basis of need, without regard to race, religion or nationality.
