Diocesan All-School Mass packs the Resch Center on October 14

GREEN BAY, Wis. (Oct. 15, 2010) – Nearly 10,000 students and faculty from every Catholic school in the Diocese of Green Bay participated in an all-school Mass at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 14 at the Resch Center.

Bishop David Ricken celebrated the Mass with Auxiliary Bishop Robert Morneau and Bishop Emeritus Robert Banks and many priests serving in the diocese. Several deacons also participated.

Special guests included:
  • the presidents of Silver Lake and St. Norbert colleges
  • 16 representatives from the religious orders serving in the diocese
  • members of the Bishop’s Advisory Council
  • members of the Diocesan Board of Education
The Diocesan Association of School Administrators (DASA) hosted the Mass, which was planned by a committee of five principals and the Diocesan Department of Education.

May be largest gathering

This may be the largest gathering of Catholic school students in the history of the Diocese, as well as one of the largest events at the Resch Center, possibly topping the record attendance of a recent Elton John concert.

The Resch Center will seat 10,000, said Jane Schueller, principal of Resurrection School in Allouez and an event coordinator. "There’s a lot of excitement about doing this."

To help meet the more than $12,000 in expenses -- facility rental and personnel to operate lighting and sound equipment -- each school was charged $1 per student. The principals’ association covered some costs and donations are being accepted. No diocesan funds will be used for this event.

Youth choirs to lead singing

Youth choirs from the diocesan high schools will sing before Mass and then lead the assembly in song at Mass. A retired music teacher went to each high school to rehearse the liturgical music with students.

At the end of Mass, Bishop Ricken gave a special blessing to all the teachers, who wore red polo shirts with a logo saying, “I Make a Difference.”

After Mass, Building Permit, a Catholic band whose seven members come from parishes in Neenah, Appleton and Kimberly/Darboy, donated their time to perform a concert for students while they ate their bag lunches.

Because of limited seating only students and invited guests were able to attend.
