In the midst of a busy, hectic life, it is often difficult to find enough time to be attentive to your spiritual life. You want a deeper relationship with God, but you don't know how to go about this. Spiritual direction offers you the opportunity to meet regularly with someone trained to help you begin to more fully recognize God's presence in your life.
Spiritual direction is NOT about one person "directing" or giving advice to another. Instead, the spiritual director is a companion who accompanies you on your spiritual journey so that you can grow in relationship with God, self, others, and all of creation.
Spiritual direction is NOT counseling. While some people see a therapist while they also meet with a spiritual director, the purpose of spiritual direction is for you to be intentional about your relationship with God. While spiritual direction can help you to share struggles, losses and disappointments as they impact your relationship with God, self, and others, there is no substitute for counseling for people who are struggling to function in daily life.
Spiritual direction is first and foremost a way for you to grow closer to God. Since God does not communicate with us the same way as other people in our lives, it often helps to have another human being to speak with about how we experience God interacting (or not) in our lives.
