Parents play the greatest formative role in their children's life. At the baptism of our children, we commit to sharing our faith with them, and Christ and the church help support us in that role.
Parents also play an important role in our children's vocation: first to follow Christ, and then to pray about God's specific call to married life, single life, consecrated religious life, or ordained life. We tend to be good at helping our children prepare for a job or occupation, but less good at preparing them for their life's vocation, the most important commitment they will make in their lives.
When it comes to priesthood and religious life, parents want their children to be happy.
Did you know that the #1 profession in the United States for job satisfaction is clergy?
Did you know that the #1 profession in the United State for overall happiness with life is clergy?
It's true! Check out this 2007 study from the University of Chicago, National Opinion Research Center.
In the Diocese of Green Bay, that holds true as well. A recent survey of our diocesan priests indicates that they find great satisfaction in their vocation. Check out The Compass article about this.
Parents entrust some of the care of their children to teachers. Through Catholic schools and religious education or faith formation programs, our teachers and catechists help parents to share the good news of Jesus Christ.
