Foundational Catechetical Certification seeks to engage the whole community in the ongoing formation of their Catholic faith and to attain a basic standard of knowledge of Christ and of Church teachings.
The United States Catholic Catechism for Adults (USCCA) is the foundational text for all adult faith formation and catechesis in the Diocese of Green Bay.
Diocese of Green Bay Catechetical Certification Policy
Bishop David Ricken established the Diocese of Green Bay Catechetical Certification Policy in 2012.
- What? An opportunity for all adults and catechetical leaders to grow "in communion, in intimacy, with Jesus Christ." (Catechesi Tradendae, 5)
- Who? Certification courses are open to all adults who wish to grow in their faith. Catechetical certification is a requirement for all religious education administrators, youth ministers, catechists, Catholic school teachers and school administrators.
- Why? The purpose of catechetical certification is to “help the whole community of faith to come to at least a basic standard of knowledge of Christ and of the teachings of the Church” and to “prepare the next generations to answer generously the call to holiness.” (from Bishop David L. Ricken’s Pastoral Letter A New Moment for Catechesis in the Diocese of Green Bay, November 2009).

FCC Equivalency for 2019-20
In order to encourage full participation and in support of the Diocesan mission of becoming missionary disciples, the attendance of a complete ALPHA series (all sessions plus the Alpha day-away), or Catholic Evangelization Studies course (all sessions) or a full-day Discipleship Formation seminar will count as Enrichment, and participants will be allowed to defer the usual FCC requirements to the following year.
In other words, if a catechist/school teacher/administrator participates in one of the above listed courses in 2020, they have met the requirement for catechetical certification for that year but will still need to fulfill their usual FCC requirements the following year. In all cases, a Completion Form must be submitted to the Office of Families & Schools after the completion of the course as verification. Completion forms can be found

The Office of Families & Schools offers a series of online FCC classes, which can be taken at the participant’s own pace and place. Each course involves five 2-hour lecture videos, downloadable notes, and supplemental resources pertinent to the topic. Online courses follow the same lesson plan as classroom sessions and may be used to take the entire course or specific sessions as make-ups. Participants are responsible for submitting their own completion form. There is no registration fees, thanks in part to Bishop’s Appeal funding.
