Welcome Pilgrims of Hope

Welcome to the Jubilee of Hope! Our Holy Father, Pope Francis has called the Church and the entire world to become Pilgrims of Hope throughout this year. He encourages us to make pilgrimage (spiritual journeys to deepen our relationship with Christ) to holy sites to enliven and strengthen our hope that Jesus Christ is truly with us.

As you partake in pilgrimage to any of the three designated jubilee sites within our Diocese, you have embarked on a journey that leads you to Jesus Christ. Our Lord deeply desires you to experience the hope that is found within His divine love and through the unending mercy that He is waiting to give to you and your loved ones.

On our journey throughout this Jubilee Year of Hope, I pray you can surrender your care, worries, hopes, and anxieties into the hand of our Lord. Give them to Him and trust that Our Father in Heaven will take
care of you. Our Hope is in the Lord, now and forever!

Sincerely in Christ,
Bishop David L. Ricken

The following locations have been designated as sacred places of pilgrimage in the Diocese of Green Bay for the Jubilee Year.

St. Francis Xavier Cathedral
140 S Monroe Ave * Green Bay, WI

St. Francis Xavier Cathedral is the Mother Church for the Diocese of Green Bay, and is also a vibrant and welcoming parish community. Selected as the location in 1851, the current cathedral was consecrated in 1881 after five years of construction. The architecture is Romanesque in form and was modeled after a church in Munich, Germany - where the second Bishop of the Diocese of Green Bay was a pastor before immigrating to the United States. The Cathedral is home to may devotional opportunities and areas for prayer, including the site of the Jubilee Pilgrim Cross.

The National Shrine of Our Lady of Champion

The National Shrine of Our Lady of Champion is the first and only approved Marian Apparition site in the United States. It preserves the peace-filled grounds where Mary, the Mother of Jesus, appeared three times to Adele Brise in 1859, identifying herself as the “Queen of Heaven who prays for the conversion of sinners.”

Located just north of Green Bay, this humble yet powerful sanctuary serves as a refuge for all who seek spiritual and physical healing through the Sacraments and prayer. The National Shrine is open year-long for pilgrims to experience a deeper encounter with Jesus through the intercession of His Blessed Mother, Mary.

FAQs

What is a Jubilee / Plenary Indulgence?

An indulgence is a powerful gift to the souls of believers. Indulgences aid in healing the brokenness caused by our sins in this world and reduce or completely eliminate the temporal punishment due to our sins. Indulgences are either partial or plenary (complete). Indulgences may be obtained for oneself or for the souls of the deceased. One Jubilee/ plenary indulgence may be received each day.

What if I cannot participate in a pilgrimage or Jubilee celebration?

(Cloistered nuns & monks, elderly, the sick, and prisoners)
For those who cannot participate in the various solemn celebrations, pilgrimages, and pious visits for serious reasons, they may still be able to receive the indulgence by living their lives with faith and joyful hope in the midst of their trials and by receiving Holy Communion or attending Mass, if necessary, through various forms of media. For those who are incarcerated, they may receive the indulgence by praying in their prison chapels.

Since the experience of hope becomes visible in the witness of concrete signs as Jesus Himself taught us, for those members of the faithful who perform any of the spiritual or corporal works of mercy, these too shall surely obtain the Jubilee indulgence.

The Jubilee Prayer

Father in heaven, may the faith you have given us in your son, Jesus Christ, our brother, and the flame of charity enkindled in our hearts by the Holy Spirit, reawaken in us the blessed hope for the coming of your Kingdom.

May your grace transform us into tireless cultivators of the seeds of the Gospel. May those seeds transform from within both humanity and the whole cosmos in the sure expectation of a new heaven and a new earth, when, with the powers of Evil vanquished, your glory will shine eternally.

May the grace of the Jubilee reawaken in us, Pilgrims of Hope, a yearning for the treasures of heaven. May that same grace spread the joy and peace of our Redeemer throughout the earth. To you our God, eternally blessed, be glory and praise for ever.
Amen

Franciscus
